John 13:12-15 – When Jesus had washed their feet and put on his outer robe, he sat down again and told them, “Do you realize what I’ve done to you? You call me Teacher and Lord, and you are right because this is what I am. So if I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you must also wash one another’s feet. I’ve set an example for you, so that you may do as I have done to you.
In this verse Jesus washed his disciples’ feet and assured them that eventually they would understand this act.
By washing the feet of his followers Jesus sets an example for all of humanity. If he, our almighty God, can humbly clean the feet of others then we should do the same. We should love others and treat one another as we would wish to be treated in return.
Jesus teaches us that we are all the same in God’s eyes. There are no divides of wealth, status, or greatness: we are all equal counterparts. As Christians we must always treat others with respect, just as Jesus treated his own disciples. With such abounding equality and justice at its core, the Christian faith will continue to draw people to it. Amen.
