John 4:14 – ‘But those who drink the water that I will give them will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give them will become in them a spring which will provide them with life-giving water and give them eternal life.’
Throughout history, the presence of water has been both life-giving and strategic. Whether a person lives in a dry climate or a rainforest, water is a non-negotiable necessity. In a dry and barren climate, knowing where to find water can mean the difference between life and death.
Our spiritual life also has certain non-negotiable elements. Jesus, upon encountering a spiritually thirsty Samaritan woman at a well, declared to her that He alone could provide living water. He told her “whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst.” By this Jesus mean, whoever believes in Him and God the father and seeks to follow His commandments, by doing so the whole free gift of God’s renewal comes through Christ to them. For we know that He was sent for the purpose of bringing to us a new life.
My dear brothers and sisters in Christ, we desperately need the sustenance that comes only from Jesus Christ. And our souls should thirst for God and long after Him. He alone should be our hearts desire and we must worship Him forever. And so the promise is that they who believe in Him and rest upon His love shall receive into their spirits a new life principle which shall rise in their hearts like a fountain, springing up into everlasting life.
